About The Event

Shibori is the Japanese word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing. The word comes from the verb root shiboru, "to wring, squeeze, press." In this workshop we will use a beautiful organic indigo dye which results in stunning shades of blue.

In this half day workshop, Helena will start by introducing Indigo Shibori Dyeing, the technique, tips and tricks on how to replicate this craft at home. Helena will also demonstrate different methods and what can be achieved - all while the vat is getting ready. This will give everyone time and inspiration for the pieces they will want to make. You will then move on to practicing what you have just learnt!

You will get 2 50cm square white cotton pieces of fabric to try out different techniques (incl. clamping, using elastic bands, tracing shapes etc). These pieces can then be framed or used for quilting for example or even to make cushion covers.

You will then also get to dye a calico bag and a muslin scarf to 'have another go'!

This is a one of a kind experience.... Helena Geiger, an indigenous artist local to Jervis Bay, has over 20 years experience devoted to creating stunning work with textile design. Her career is constantly evolving. Her work with galleries, interior designers, furnishing and fashion retailers and many cultural organisations has earned her a stellar reputation for unique, varied and functional fabric craftsmanship.

This workshop takes place at the gorgeously peaceful historic classroom at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, walking distance from the centre of Huskisson, in the heart of Jervis Bay.
